Customer Review: A formidable ally in our war against pantry moths, but not perfect
Summary: 4 Stars
We are in the middle of a three-month war with pantry moths, and these have been our most effective defense. Although they do not pass the truly airtight "can I lift the lid without popping it?" test, when I needed to wash something off the side of one that had powdered sugar on it, I just washed it under the tap, since I was confident it wouldn't get the sugar wet. It worked.
Pros:
-sturdy (as long as you don't drop them; then they can crack easily)
-good seal (good enough to keep bugs out, but does let in some moisture: my cereal doesn't stay perfectly crisp)
-very easy to stack (they fit perfectly in our Ikea Expedit shelving)
-nice clear sides shows what's inside
-I've got hand problems, and these are very easy on my hands
-the only thing we've used that is both convenient but also protects against the moths
Cons:
-expensive
-I had to buy my own to supplement this set. The biggest that comes with this (4.0 quarts) is not big enough for a full bag of 5lb flour. I had to buy a 5.5 quart one separately.
-The little ones included aren't all that useful. I put sesame seeds and pine nuts in mine. This set doesn't have enough of the ones that are perfect for rice (1.5 quarts) and too many of the ones that are small.
-hard to wash: you have to undo the lids to let them air dry. It takes at least 12 hours.
-the tops seem to get dirty and are hard to clean (they have a greasy grey film on them) between real washings
Buying advice:
-Plan on buying a few to supplement these sizes (but it still makes sense to buy the big pack first)
-If you have kids or drop things, this might not be the set for you.
-Be patient with the drying times
