Customer Review: Don't walk away until you hear it ticking

This timer is solidly built and attractive. It has both a digital and a mechanical timer, but I find myself using the mechanical one for short 5-10 minute reminders almost exclusively--and that's the part where I've had to learn about a "workaround".
Just turn the dial and wait, right? It IS supposed to be that easy, but on the first few occasions when I simply wanted a 5-minute reminder, I never got that ring. When I returned to check on the timer, the dial was stuck at 5 minutes. If I do a quarter turn or more, then I can hear it start ticking. If I turn it back to 5 minutes, then it continues to tick.
So it seems that you need to wind the mechanical spring enough so it can power the timer. I'm not sure if this is a defect or it's the design, but it sure took me a few times before I remembered to always listen for it to start ticking before I walk away, especially for short durations.
