Customer Review: Food crumbles instead of slicing

I purchased this product from Kitchen Kaboodle and was disappointed from first use.
On a positive note, the blade adjustment is easy to use, push in and turn for different thickness cutting or to alternate between the thick and thin julienne. I also like the legs to give room beneath the device for product to fall.
I tried to dice apples for a spice cake. The apples jammed and didn't slice all the way. A kindergartner with a butter knife might have done a neater job. The apples somtimes sliced, but the julienne blade didn't cut all the way through, so I had partially julienned, partially sliced apple hunks. Not attractive.
Then, I tried to thinly slice apples. It mushed them until I made the slices thick enough that I could have easily cut them myself with a chef knife. The slices were uneven and the hand guard made it hard to position the apples to make consistent slices.
Next, I tried onion slices...it crumbled the onion. I didn't know onions could crumble. I did get a few nice slices out of one onion, but they were interspersed with raggedy-edged slices.
Finally, I tried a ripe tomato. No go. The blade didn't incise the skin, just bruised the fruit.
I have friends who have had positive experiences with this slicer, but personally, I can't make it perform consistently enough to warrent the price. I am returning it and plan to try to the Swissmar V-Slicer instead.
